Yesterday at the 2010 Tokyo Game Show (TGS), Sony announced that its 3D Blu-ray enabling version 3.50 software update for the PlayStation 3, will be released on the 21st of September.

The update will finally allow owners of the PS3 to watch 3D Blu-ray movies in the comfort of their own living rooms. According to engadget, the update has initially been announced for Japan, but Sony is expected to release it worldwide on the same date.

Future 3D centred updates for the PS3 is expected as well, with Sony hinting at 3D rendering for photos, PlayTV and even YouTube in 3D. The company also stated that they were devoted to introducing 3D to hardcore gamers and not just the casual crowd with games such as God of War, LittleBigPlanet and Gran Turismo 5 featuring 3D capabilities. At the IFA 2010 expo held in Berlin last month, Sony announced its intentions of carrying 3D technology forward.

“The 3D train is moving forward, speedily and steadily. And Sony clearly has the strongest engine in this 3D express”, said Sir Howard Stringer, CEO of Sony Corporation. It remains to be seen whether the PS3 will be able to adequately display high definition games in full 3D, but the upcoming Killzone 3 should answer that question. Just remember to pack those 3D glasses.
